The Vice Chancellor, Prof. William A. L. Anangisye, regrets to announce the death of Professor Isaria Kimambo (1931 – 2018) who passed away on 2nd November 2018 at his residence in Makongo Juu, Dar es Salaam.
Prof. Kimambo, born in 1931, was the first Tanzanian Professor of History at the University of Dar es Salaam. He also served in different managerial positions, most importantly as Vice Principal of the then University College, Dar es Salaam from 1969 to 1970 and the first Chief Academic Officer (CACO) of the University of Dar es Salaam from 1970 to 1982 where he significantly contributed to the development of the university generally and particularly in the development of academic programs as well as the appointment of new faculty.
Prof. Kimambo was a dedicated scholar, educator and leader working particularly in the areas of History and most especially African History. Among his famous publications are “Penetration and Protest in Tanzania: Impact of World Economy on the Pare, 1860–1960”; “East African Expression of Christianity”; and “Custodians of the Land: Ecology and Culture in the History of Tanzania”.
Prof. Isaria Kimambo started his career as a Primary School Teacher at Lutheran Primary School Natiro. He was awarded a scholarship to pursue his Undergraduate studies and Master’s Degree majoring in Education at Pacific Lutheran University, USA, and later PhD in History at Northwestern University in 1967. He was promoted through the ranks to Professor in 1971. He has been a chairperson and member of different national and international bodies.
Funeral arrangements are underway at his residence in Makongo Juu, Dar es Salaam. The University community will celebrate Prof. Kimambo’s life and pay last respect on Wednesday 7th November 2018 at Nkrumah Hall from 9:00am to which you’re all invited to attend this important event. He will be laid to rest at his residence in Mbokomu, Moshi, Kilimanjaro on 8th November 2018.
