The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Cleaner Production Centre of Tanzania (CPCT) today joined hands in launching a Mobile Environmental Laboratory Unit. This event was officiated by Hon Dr. Terezya Huvisa, Minister of State, Vice President’s Office – Division of Environment. UNIDO has been working with various stakeholders in Tanzania, including the Vice President’s Office – Division of Environment, CPCT and other UN agencies in promoting the concept of Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) in Tanzania’s industry.

Hon. Dr. Terezya Huvisa remarked, “The government has started taking a number of steps to implement measures for dealing with environmental degradation and pollution and will continue to support all initiatives which address climate change challenges. In this regard we are very glad that UNIDO and the CPCT have taken this initiative of launching the Mobile Environmental Monitoring Laboratory which will greatly enhance our efforts to closely monitor gaseous and liquid emission and allow for regular feedback to our productive sectors.”

The Mobile Monitoring Laboratory Unit is expected to give quick and precise on-the-spot measurements of liquid and gaseous effluents from industrial or productive operations. This is an initiative that is geared towards waste an increase of industrial productivity while using less energy, water and raw materials so as to significantly reduce waste.

“I am optimistic that with the introduction of this laboratory, our strategies and engagement with the private sector and other stakeholders will be better informed and responsive to the real challenges that impede the green industrial growth that we aspire to realize,” said Mr. Emmanuel Kalenzi, UNIDO Representative in Tanzania.

12 Tanzanians received specialized training on the use of the facility. Hon. Dr. Terezya Huvisa was quick to challenge the new trainees to ensure that their local environments are up to standard and challenged UNIDO and CPCT to look into more areas, including the mining industry, to ensure that there is minimal generation of waste and harmful emissions.

“For quite some time now we have been trying to have a mobile facility for environmental pollution monitoring and performing on-the-spot analysis of industrial effluents and air pollution… We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the UN through UNIDO for the gesture shown in supporting our endeavor to deliver timely and accurate qualitative and quantitative assessments,” said the Executive Director of CPCT, Prof. Cleophas Migiro.
