HON. CHIKAWE OFFICIATES EXPERT MEETING ON GENOCIDE PREVENTION AND THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT IN DAR ES SALAAM ON 18TH MARCH 2013
 
Hon Mathias Chikawe (MP), Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs has on 18th March 2013 opened an Expert Meeting on Genocide Prevention and Responsibility to Protect with a theme “Towards a Community of Commitment”.


The meeting is scheduled to take place for three days with the aim of exploring learning and practical approaches to prevention of Atrocities, learning best practices in prevention and protecting and building national strategies and structures in the field of prevention of genocide and mass atrocities. Several experts from Argentina, Australia, Denmark, Tanzania, Switzerland and Several Civil Societies Organizations working on Prevention of genocide and mass atrocities have attended the meeting.

In his opening remarks Hon Chikawe said, the world has witnessed profound acts of atrocities in the past decade even in areas that were least expected, therefore it does not come as a surprise that prevention is attracting a common cause.

He said Tanzania remain committed to UN Convention on the Prevention of Crime of Genocide and continues to adopt domestic and international policies geared towards building a hate free society and contribute to the attainment of a world free from Genocide. 

That Tanzania has always been in the forefront to global and regional initiatives on peace and prevention of genocide, mass atrocities and war crimes. He underscored the importance of partnering with others to share best practices, technical assistance and find solutions to address the potential threat of Genocide.
