Statement by President Obama on the Death of Nelson Mandela

James S. Brady Press Briefing Room - 5:25 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT:  At his trial in 1964, Nelson Mandela closed his statement from the dock saying, “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination.  I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.  It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve.  But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

And Nelson Mandela lived for that ideal, and he made it real.  He achieved more than could be expected of any man.  Today, he has gone home.  And we have lost one of the most influential, courageous, and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this Earth.  He no longer belongs to us -- he belongs to the ages.

Through his fierce dignity and unbending will to sacrifice his own freedom for the freedom of others, Madiba transformed South Africa -- and moved all of us.  His journey from a prisoner to a President embodied the promise that human beings -- and countries -- can change for the better.  His commitment to transfer power and reconcile with those who jailed him set an example that all humanity should aspire to, whether in the lives of nations or our own personal lives.  And the fact that he did it all with grace and good humor, and an ability to acknowledge his own imperfections, only makes the man that much more remarkable.  As he once said, “I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying.”

I am one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela's life.  My very first political action, the first thing I ever did that involved an issue or a policy or politics, was a protest against apartheid.  I studied his words and his writings.  The day that he was released from prison gave me a sense of what human beings can do when they’re guided by their hopes and not by their fears.  And like so many around the globe, I cannot fully imagine my own life without the example that Nelson Mandela set, and so long as I live I will do what I can to learn from him.

To Graça Machel and his family, Michelle and I extend our deepest sympathy and gratitude for sharing this extraordinary man with us.  His life’s work meant long days away from those who loved him the most.  And I only hope that the time spent with him these last few weeks brought peace and comfort to his family.

To the people of South Africa, we draw strength from the example of renewal, and reconciliation, and resilience that you made real.  A free South Africa at peace with itself -- that’s an example to the world, and that’s Madiba’s legacy to the nation he loved.

We will not likely see the likes of Nelson Mandela again.  So it falls to us as best we can to forward the example that he set:  to make decisions guided not by hate, but by love; to never discount the difference that one person can make; to strive for a future that is worthy of his sacrifice.

For now, let us pause and give thanks for the fact that Nelson Mandela lived -- a man who took history in his hands, and bent the arc of the moral universe toward justice.  May God Bless his memory and keep him in peace.

Ag. UN Resident Coordinator, Dr. Jama Gulaid, speaks to his fellow UN staff members during a function to Commemorate  the World Aids Day at Karimjee hall in Dar es Salaam.

THE Latest Tanzania HIV and Malaria indicator Survey (THMIS) 2011 to 2012 interviewed 10,967 female and 8,352 male age group between 15-49 shows that there are 1.4 million to 1.6 million people living with HIV in the country.
Speaking during the Commemoration of World Aids Day held at the Karimjee hall in Dar es salaam, Acting UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Jama Gulaid said that HIV prevalence is 5.1 percent and the occurrence is higher among women than men is estimated between 6.2 percent versus 3.8 percent
“HIV prevalence among young women is higher than among young men – particularly for youth age 23- 29 where women are three times more likely to be infected than men,” he said.
He added that high vulnerability of young women to contract HIV would require an additional individual and national effort, to ensure that associated structural factors are addressed.
Gulaid said that it is also critical to have a comprehensive sexual reproductive education in the communities and it’s vital that each and every one should discuss about HIV/Aids with their children.
“As we are all aware, World AIDS Day is celebrated on the 1st of December every year for the purpose of raising awareness about HIV and AIDS and to demonstrate International Solidarity to respond to this global pandemic,” he added. For more CLICK HERE

The Director of Middle East  in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Yahaya Simba, speaks during the commemoration of  the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in Dar es Salaam.

The government calls on international
community intervention

The Government has admitted that the issue of Palestine is the most complicated in the contemporary global relations and poses a great threat to peace, security and tranquility in the world. MOblog reports from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Speaking to invited dignitaries during the commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity for the people of Palestine in Dar es Salaam , the Director of Middle East Amb. Yahaya Simba, representing  the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. John Haule said that, the unwillingness of the international community to take decisive action, political, military and territorial occupation of Palestine over the years has left millions of them to suffer.
“Hostilities between key players in the region and ultraconservative resistance to change, have all added up to complicate the situation.
“The interplay of the above led to a situation where the international community is simply seen to be doing too little and too late on the Palestine question, causing one party to the conflict to maintain pre-established positions that allow limited flexibility towards an acceptable solution,” he said.
Amb. Simba said that the status quo on settlements in occupied Palestinian territories continuously abrogated against UN Resolutions although on the other hand it is the duty of the international community to support national independence and sovereignty of the Palestinians people.
Amb. Simba further said that through the able visionary, courageous and wise leadership of Mahmoud Abbas, more than 130 United Nations (UN) member states have recognized the State of Palestine; the People of Palestine have been granted ‘non-member observer state’ status in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), and Palestine is now a full member of UNESCO.

BREAKING NYUZZZZZZZ.......: Nelson Mandela dies at 95

Former South African President Nelson Mandela died peacefully at his Johannesburg home on Thursday after a prolonged lung infection. He was 95.
Mandela, the country's first black president and anti-apartheid icon, emerged from 27 years in apartheid prisons to help guide South Africa out of bloodshed and turmoil to democracy.
"Fellow South Africans, our beloved Nelson Rohlihlahla Mandela, the founding president of our democratic nation, has departed," President Jacob Zuma said in a nationally televised address.
"Our people have lost a father. Although we knew this day was going to come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss. His tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world. His humility, passion and humanity, earned him their love," he added.
Mandela would receive a full state funeral,
Zuma said, ordering flags to be flown at half mast.
Al Jazeera's Tania Page, reporting from outside Mandela's home in Johannesburg, said that there was a real sense of celebration in tribute to Mandela there, while world leaders were also delivering their tributes.

People are "singing songs decicated to Mandela", said our correspondent.

Mandela rose from rural obscurity to challenge the might of white minority apartheid government - a struggle that gave the 20th century one of its most respected and loved figures.
He was among the first to advocate armed resistance to apartheid in 1960, but was quick to preach reconciliation and forgiveness when the country's white minority began easing its grip on power 30 years later.

Mandela was elected president in landmark all-race elections in 1994 and retired in 1999.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, an honour he shared with FW de Klerk, the white Afrikaner leader who released from jail arguably the world's most famous political prisoner.
As president, Mandela faced the monumental task of forging a new nation from the deep racial injustices left over from the apartheid era, making reconciliation the theme of his time in office.
The hallmark of Mandela's mission was the Truth and Reconciliation Commission which probed apartheid crimes on both sides of the struggle and tried to heal the country's wounds. It also provided a model for other countries torn by civil strife.
In 1999, Mandela handed over power to younger leaders better equipped to manage a modern economy - a rare voluntary departure from power cited as an example to African leaders.
In retirement, he shifted his energies to battling South Africa's AIDS crisis and the struggle became personal when he lost his only surviving son to the disease in 2005.
Mandela's last major appearance on the global stage came in 2010 when he attended the championship match of the soccer World Cup, where he received a thunderous ovation from the 90,000 at the stadium in Soweto, the neighbourhood in which he cut his teeth as a resistance leader.
Charged with capital offences in the infamous 1963 Rivonia Trial, his statement from the dock was his political testimony.
"During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination."
